The Rad Molly Suit & New Fabric at ALD

I know... I know... my last couple of posts have been swimwear. And I'll be honest... I'm not quite done. I told you I made a commitment to sewing some swimwear this month. I'm going to be at least somewhat proficient by the end of the summer. haha

I'm loving this suit though! And, I'm loving it for a few reasons. It's pretty easy, it has a few options, and it didn't take me very long to make. 




I remember when this one released.... I really liked it. I was drawn to it, and I almost bought it, but I didn't. Because... at that point, I wasn't sewing much with swim. I didn't need another pattern that would just sit there and not be used. I decided to hold off on buying the pattern until I knew it would be sewn. 

Every time Rad has had a pattern sale, I've looked at the Molly though. I REALLY liked the look of this suit.

So when Amelia Lane Designs announced that they had these beautiful fabrics that they were going to run on pre-order, the second I saw this one, I knew it was destined to be a Molly. And, I'd already sewn a couple of more swim patterns, so I was feeling confident. 

Let me tell you though... I should have started with this one. It was by far the easiest! The others weren't overly complicated, but this one was EASY. Maybe sewing swimwear isn't as scary as I had made it out to be! 🤣


Let's talk about the pattern. I mentioned that it has more than one option. You can choose whether you want a one piece or a two piece suit. For the two piece suit, you can choose whether you want high rise bottoms or low rise bottoms. Then, all of the pieces can be finished with either swim elastic or bands. I really like swim elastic, but I ran out! I am waiting for some more to come in, but honestly, I'm obsessed with the way the bands look on this suit! 

I had already planned to put bands on the bottoms, because that naturally provides a bit more coverage than adding elastic. I like trying to cover everything up on the bottom! But when I realized I was out of my 1/4 inch elastic, I knew that the suit would look awesome with the bands. I really think it does!! 

The top (waistband) should be finished with thicker waistband elastic, but I didn't have any in black. And I REALLY didn't want to mess the look up with a different color, so I chose to just band it as well. I love it! The elastic might provide a bit more support, but I think this worked just fine!

Sewing It:

As I mentioned, this is a fabric available on pre-order at Amelia Lane Designs. This is actually a triathalon athletic fabric - it's good for both swimwear and athletic wear. The print is so beautiful, and as I said, it just SCREAMED "Molly" at me! 😉

I lined my suit with swim lining available at Amelia Lane Designs as well. I wanted a bit of support in the top, so I added power mesh and swim cups. I was worried that it would feel too compressive, but it doesn't, and is very comfortable! 

The pattern didn't have any placement included for cups, so I folded my top in half and marked the center. Then I spaced them each on the other side of the center line. It's not a perfect placement, but it's pretty good - I'm satisfied with them! 

I planned to serge the bands on. I generally always serge bands. This time though, I felt like I had more control sewing the swim bands with my sewing machine - the swim is a little slippier than I'm used to, and this is really good quality swim that isn't as slippery as most. I just need practice. 😉 I used a lot of pins, and stitched on my sewing machine. I stopped, and made sure my fabric was all lined up every few inches, and it worked out perfectly.

So... if anyone was wondering, yes, you CAN sew swimwear without a serger. This suit was sewn completely on my sewing machine! 

I LOVE the fit!

I love the fit of this y'all! It covers really well, provides enough support, and is so comfortable. I'm satisfied with how well the bottoms cover. I'm super comfortable wearing it, and feel so confident! This suit is definitely my favorite new thing!
