The pleats, the drape, the crossover neckline, the dropped waist dress option... all the reasons I was drawn to test the Lauren.
I initially started out sewing the Lauren with a super light weight, very drapey fabric that I got somewhere really cheap. It was a mystery knit. I would assume it was some combination of rayon and polyester, and who knows what else. But it wouldn't cooperate and I was getting super frustrated, so I decided that I needed to put it down and cut the pattern out again.
I reached for a liverpool that I have had in my stash for a little bit. It was from a Knitpop auction. I love liverpool and got a great deal on it! I was excited to recut, because the print is so pretty. I had two yards of this gorgeous print, and had to decide whether I would sew a top length with long sleeves or a dress length with short sleeves. I loved EVERY Lauren I saw in the testing group, but was really drawn to the waist on the dress. Most of the patterns I own have either an empire waist or regular waist, but I loved the look of this dropped waistline, so I decided to go for the dress. And I super love it!
Sewing the Lauren
As you would expect from Sinclair Patterns, the Lauren pattern pieces are all labeled perfectly. There are notches making everything easy to line up. Everything fits together and goes together well.
A wide variety of fabrics will work for this pattern, and they all look beautiful, but there are some things to keep in mind when choosing your fabric. I had trouble with the pleats. Not a lot... I obviously made it. It was likely due to the fact that my fabric was a little thick. I think the pleats would have been easier to make, baste, and sew in a thinner rayon spandex or DBP, but the outcome is amazing in every fabric. Liverpool has more structure to "hold" the pleats, but others drape differently. It truly makes a lovely top/dress in every fabric I have seen so far though! I love wearing liverpool though, so although I struggled a bit with sewing it, I am happy to have the dress. 😊 Using the thicker fabric, it was a bit bulky at the seams and I chose to sew the side seams with my sewing machine rather than my serger. I'm not positive that my serger would have gone through the bulk of the pleats in liverpool. I am sure that it would have been easier to sew, less bulky in rayon spandex, single or double brushed poly, so I'm eager to try it again in one of those fabrics!
Putting it All Together
As with every Sinclair pattern I've ever made, the pattern printed and went together very easily. The instructions are always phenomenal, explaining every step thoroughly. Oxana always goes beyond what is expected and drafts each pattern separately for petite, regular, and tall lengths, which is amazing for people who aren't average height... they don't have to make any length adjustments!
About the Pattern
The pattern has a beautiful crossover neckline. The bottom layer is fitted against the body and high enough to be modest! Love this! The top layer has more fabric, has beautiful pleats at the shoulder and side seam, taking the look of this top or dress to dressy! This pattern can be made either as a top at waist length or as a skirt with a partial circle skirt. It is such a classic style. It makes me feel like dancing! Both the top length and dress length are perfect for everyday wear or for dressing up! I'm REALLY looking forward to wearing my dress to church when it warms up a bit!
