I'm so happy for the opportunity to try and review the Athina Kakou Samantha Dress! If you've been following me long, you might have picked up on my love for wrap dresses. I've made quite a few, and have really loved them all for different reasons!
So... this is just my latest wrap dress addition to my closet, and yep, I love it too! 😃
The Samantha Dress is very nice, and has several differences from other wrap dress patterns that I own.
Let's talk about what sets this pattern apart!
The BIG difference between this dress and other wrap dress patterns I own is the sleeves! This pattern does not have regular set in sleeves. It uses dolman style (grown-on) sleeves.
Another difference in this pattern and others I own is the darts at the waistline at the front and back. This gives the bodice some shape and pulls it in slightly at the waist.
In this pattern, there is also a choice for your neckline - do you want just the regular band, or would you prefer a collar. This is another feature that I haven't seen on my other wrap dress patterns.
Finally, I know this wouldn't be a big deal to make yourself anyway, but I LOVE having the pattern piece for the tie belt included in this pattern! I love how the tie belt pulls in the waist to really flatter your figure.
All About the Pattern:
The pattern is drafted for knit fabrics with 30-50% stretch.
As I mentioned, the bodice and sleeves are all one piece, making for a quick sew. There are a couple of options for the sleeves. You can choose short sleeves or 3/4 length sleeves. If you choose 3/4 length sleeves, you can choose to either use the regular hem or the split hem with a cute little tie.
The bodice is not very fitted, but there is a chart in the pattern letting you know what the finished measurements are, so that you can choose to make the size according to your preference.
Also, you'll choose other options that you might like such as the regular band at the neckline, the collar at the neckline, and the optional tie belt.
The skirt has a couple of different cut lengths. One is around the knee, and the other is a bit longer (probably around mid-calf). It is full enough to be very pretty and feminine.
My Dress:
My dress is made from a liverpool fabric I purchased at Amelia Lane Designs. It is lightweight, but stable. You may have noticed that Liverpool is something I love using. It's comfortable, easy to wear, and doesn't wrinkle.
I chose the regular neckband option, short sleeves, and I used the tie belt piece. My dress also has the shortest length for the skirt.
I chose to wrap my front bodice a little tighter than the notches on the pattern indicate to get a little more coverage. My finished bodice was also a little looser than I wanted, so I pulled it in a little more at the side seams.
