Daniel is very imaginative. He has a much bigger imagination than I ever did as a child. He's really creative and is always making all kinds of things. He plays pretend a lot. And I LOVE it! I love watching it, and listening to it.
He also pushes me to be creative. He always has the best ideas for games to play, or for things he wants me to sew. Like a Power Ranger costume that he very suddenly decided he NEEDED.
How His Costume Came to Be...
It was almost time to get ready for bed the other night, and he asked me if I would go make him a Power Ranger costume. I said, "Daniel, it's 8 o'clock. It's bedtime, and I don't even know how to make a Power Ranger costume."
I kind of figured he would drop it. I finished what I was doing in the kitchen, and he walked into the den for like 5 minutes. He came back with this picture and said, "See this is what I want, but it needs a gold symbol on the front, and it needs gold close to the neck."
I told him again that I couldn't make a costume that night. We got everybody ready for bed. When we were laying down and Daniel was trying to go to sleep, he asked, "Can you buy gold fabric anywhere?"
So... I knew he was SERIOUS.
Gathering Supplies:
The next day, when we got home from school, Daniel went to my fabric bookshelf and started pulling down EVERY scrap of red fabric he could find. He was determined to have a red Power Ranger costume that day. I told him we might have to order fabric because I wasn't sure if we had any pieces of red that were big enough. He said, "Well... if they're not big enough, we can tape them together." He was so serious, and really, really wanted the costume!
Finally, I remembered a cut of red fabric that I had just prewashed to get ready for a different project. Oh well... this seemed more important to Daniel than the other plans I had (also something for him).
He also found a little square of yellow left, and decided that it would be an okay substitute for the gold he originally asked for.
Making the Shirt
We were in a hurry. We had pulled out the yellow and red fabric, and I was trying to get a plan together. You know, sometimes you just need to think for a minute? Daniel was impatient... "When can we cut the shirt out??"
So without much thought, I pulled out a trusty tee shirt pattern - the Puperita Jelly Tee. (I've used this pattern SO many times for the boys. It's definitely a favorite). The front is cut on fold, so after cutting the front shirt, I traced it mirrored to make the whole front piece for the applique.
Originally, I considered color blocking, but then decided to just go with applique. I drew the shape for the yellow section, then made the gray stripes for the top and bottom.
I looked at a dinosaur on the Power Rangers costume that I found on the internet, and sketched a little dinosaur (as close as I could) for his costume onto Heat and Bond Lite. I ironed my dinosaur to fabric and got it ready to iron to the shirt and stitch on.
After finishing this applique, Daniel reminded me, "I need a belt!"
So, I cut off the bottom couple of inches of my shirt pattern to be the belt applique pattern. I cut a little square of yellow for the center of the belt, and then just free-stitched the dinosaur on the belt. I think the dinosaur on his belt ended up looking more like an alligator, but he didn't say anything, so I say GOOD ENOUGH!
Daniel was so excited when I finished the applique that he wanted to try the shirt on right then! We had one small problem though... all we had was a shirt front. The shirt was NOT put together yet. But it was supper time and bath time, so we had to put the project away. He was not thrilled.
After the boys fell asleep, I went back to my sewing machines and got busy finishing everything up. Daniel's shirt was finished, and I was pretty happy with the result.
The Joggers:
A few weeks ago, I grabbed this pattern on sale. Lowland Kids put a few of their patterns on sale for their one year anniversary, and I've seen people raving about this particular pattern, so I decided to try it out. I originally planned to sew them for Luke and Matthew, but since we found the one yard cut of red cotton lycra, I had just enough to make Daniel pants to go with his Power Ranger shirt.
I put together his size quickly, and cut everything out. This pattern sewed up so fast, and they're really cute. I ended up making the cuffs a bit wider - to be about the same width as the bottom of the leg, because with smaller cuffs, Daniel has had trouble getting them over his feet by himself, so I decided to just make that little modification to the pattern that first time sewing it for him.
He loves the pants, y'all. They fit him nicely. They're a little long, which I kind of expected based on his measurements, but I decided to not take any length off, because he has growing room!
He loves the soft pants with pockets! I'm sure I'll make him more of this pattern!

Daniel is a Red Ranger - a Dino Charge Ranger, if you're not familiar. I never knew there were SO many types of Power Rangers. I was never into them as a child, but Daniel is kind of loving his Power Rangers!
The next day, he came home with this. He handed it to me, said, "Can you follow these instructions?" This is a sewing pattern y'all. Thankfully he played with it when he got home and dropped it. I'm not ready to sew Power Ranger accessories... whatever this is!
