It's fall... and I haven't made anything for my nephew since the spring I think! He needed something new, but if you ever sew for tweens, you have probably noticed the disparity between the number of patterns available that will fit little kids verses the ones that will fit tweens (this is especially true for boys). There are quite a few patterns available from different pattern makers that stop at a size 12. I've even found several men's patterns, but his measurements are still a couple of inches away. This is what I LOVE about Pickle Toes. Have you ever looked at their size charts? Their kids patterns fit all the way from a size 2 for the little kids to a big kid size 22! WHOA!!!

This is my first children's pattern to try by Pickle Toes. I already fell in love with them when I tried their women's All Seasons Top and Xanadu Dolman. You can click to read my blog on those patterns if you're interested. 😉
This pattern is the Pickle Toes Perfect Play Henley! His chest measurement put him into a perfect size 12, but his waist was a 14. I was going to be grading out for his waist, but after conferring with my sister we decided to sew a straight size 14 since kids grow so fast! We think the fit is perfect!
Let me tell you about this pattern!
The Options:
You have quite a few choices to make when you're getting ready to sew this pattern. There is a short sleeve option or a faux-layered short or long sleeve option. You can choose to add a hood or just a regular neckband. You can have a solid front or a pocket on the front.
I sewed the regular short sleeve option. We live in Louisiana, and we never know this time of year if it will be too warm for long sleeves. So... we decided that, if needed, he can always layer it over a long sleeve white tee shirt! We used a neckband rather than a hood. And because my nephew NEVER takes his hands out of his pockets (which drives my sister crazy 🤣), he didn't get a pocket.
Nice Construction:
After completing the shirt, I was surprised at how nicely it turned out. The construction was simple, clear, easy to put together and has a really professional looking finish. I really like how the finished item looks, and I'll definitely sew this pattern again!
Made to Match...
He needed this shirt, because all the little guys have bright orange shirts with ghosts. You can read about the ghost shirts here. Scotty was a little old to wear the ghost tees, so a bright orange solid is perfect! The fabric is cotton lycra from Purple Seamstress, which is amazing and consistent quality! The price is great ($6.50/yard). It's very easy to sew and comfortable to wear.
