A couple of weeks ago, my 14 year old cousin was getting ready to start her ninth grade school year. She had a denim skirt that she really wanted to wear to school, and had me measure it to see if it met the "No more than 4" above the knee" requirement. Well it didn't. It looked completely appropriate to me, but just wasn't long enough. So you know, my seamstress brain got to working, and I got to thinking, "I could totally make her a new denim skirt." But a regular denim skirt has so many pieces, and is a bit of a commitment to make. I have a million things going on right now, so didn't have the time to commit to make one.

Well... then I saw someone share the Ellie and Mac Paper Bag Waist Skirt. I knew Ella would love it. It just looked like her. It has belt loops, pockets, a cute sash... what's not to love? Ella has been REALLY into belts lately, and seems to wear a lot of things tucked in. This skirt definitely fits the style she appears to be going after, and it's just really adorable on everyone! Seriously... look at the tester photos!
The Skirt Pattern:
This skirt is perfect for tucking a shirt in, has belt loops, could be worn with the sash or a regular belt. It has pockets (DEEP POCKETS!), a quick elastic waistband, a cute paper bag waist, a couple of length options, including knee length for school, and includes sizes XXS through 5XL! Seriously, anyone can wear it!
The first thing I noticed when putting the pattern together was how big the pockets were! Think big enough for cell phone 😉 It's drafted for woven fabrics, and with a fabric like denim, it's heavy/sturdy enough to carry your cell phone!
There are three different length options - mini, mid-thigh, or knee length.
The pattern looks like it has a lot of pieces when you put it together, but it is SO FAST to sew!!
Fabric:
I made this skirt using a super lightweight denim from Hobby Lobby. I really love this fabric. I end up buying several yards of it a year probably. I have two skirts made from it, my sister has a skirt made from it, my boys get pants, and now Ella has a skirt too! I think it's the lightest weight denim Hobby Lobby carries, and it's perfect! It's soft and comfortable, but still has a bit of structure.
