I made a jacket, y'all! I think this might be the most complex pattern I've made before. I've really been pushing myself lately to stretch my skill set... and doing that has required that I sew woven fabrics a bit more. You know, I love knits because they're quick and easy to sew. Wovens require me to go more slowly, pin more, be more precise, and sometimes use closures (buttons, zippers, etc).

So... my newest woven make is the Wardrobe by Me Amelia Bomber. I really love it!
Information About the Pattern:
The pattern has recently been updated to include sizes 0-24. It has a sporty look, but with the right combination of fabrics, it is also a very classic design. The jacket has a facing and a lining. The jacket is made for woven fabrics, although you could also use a sturdy knit with nice results. I might try it again one day in liverpool! It has pockets. The sleeves are set in. There is a separating zipper in the front. The collar, cuffs, and waist/ hem band are made with ribbing. The pattern is not a super quick or easy sew. So be prepared to spend a while working on it, but it has such good and beautiful results. You'll be so proud to have finished it!
Gathering Supplies:
First, when I decided to start this project, I knew I had to find the perfect fabrics. The pattern calls for woven fabrics, silky-type lining (I used a polyester lining), interfacing, ribbing for the cuffs and bands, and a separating zipper.
I went looking around at Hobby Lobby to see if I found anything, and expected to have to order fabric. But, I saw this twill with their new fall collection, and I fell in love! It's some of the prettiest fabric ever I think! 😍 I had never seen lining fabric at Hobby Lobby, so I expected to have to go somewhere else for that. But, it turns out that I've just never looked for lining there - they do carry it! In my local store, it was in the back near the special occasion fabrics. I could not find a separating zipper at Hobby Lobby, so I purchased that from Joanns.
For the ribbing... this was my biggest challenge of finding my materials! My Hobby Lobby does not carry ribbing. My Joanns carries a VERY limited supply - like only black, gray, and navy typically. So I KNEW I would have to order it, but from where? I searched around on several sites, and finally remembered that Nature's Fabrics carries ribbing in MANY COLORS! YES! So if you've ever tried to match a fabric that you already own with a fabric on a website, you know that this is a bit of a challenge. I ended up pulling up a photo on the Hobby Lobby website of the fabric I purchased and comparing the picture with the ribbing colors at Nature's Fabric... I figured that trying to match everything on my screen was probably my best bet. Fortunately it worked out! It's almost a perfect match!
Apprehensions with Starting:
Y'all, I have no idea why I do this, but every time I want to start a "big" project that has a lot of pieces, I PUT IT OFF. Like, I want to sew this dress or this jacket, but cutting all the pieces feels overwhelming. So I wait. I know that cutting is going to take a while, and that sewing it is going to take a while.
Finally, one night, I had the energy to get myself together and cut the jacket out. It was a LOT of pieces. I labeled pieces on the back side with a washable marker so I wouldn't confuse anything when sewing it. I neatly folded all of my pieces and put them on my cutting table to wait for another day.
I knew I didn't want to rush this project. I don't consider myself an advanced seamstress, so I was not aiming for perfect, but was aiming for as perfect as I could do. I wanted to take my time and do a good job, because I REALLY wanted this jacket to be wearable. I wanted the jacket to be as pretty as I imagined. So I paced myself. Before starting, I looked at the tutorial, read through each step, and divided my project out into days. I planned how many steps I would complete each day. It seemed less overwhelming. I felt less likely to try to rush, and I really only had to work on it for a few days to complete it.
When I started shopping for this project, my biggest fear was sewing the lining! You know, I've never used actual lining before, but it's a bit more slippery than a lot of other fabrics. I went slowly and used lots of pins. It wasn't a problem at all. I'm no longer afraid of lining!
Lastly, what I DID NOT want to do was shorten a zipper. But guess what? I couldn't find the right length locally. So I did. 🤣 I've shortened one other separating zipper in my life and it was not my favorite thing to do. So I haven't done it again. Y'all I don't know why I remembered it being so bad, because it didn't take that long.
Sewing the Jacket:
As I mentioned, I divided the tutorial into days so that I was less likely to rush through steps or feel overwhelmed. I definitely recommend reading the steps first so that you can have an idea of when you are doing certain steps. You'll have a better understanding of the entire project and be less likely to make mistakes.
As soon as I had completed a few steps, I was getting so excited. I kept telling my husband how much I loved the jacket and how excited I was. I think he didn't know what to do with me... he just kept saying, "I'm glad you really love it!" 🤣
The pattern pieces were all marked and easy to understand. There are notches to help you match up your pattern pieces perfectly. Everything goes together really nicely. The tutorial was pretty easy to follow, and was updated during this re-test for even easier to follow instructions. Although I wouldn't consider this an "easy sew," it was fun to put together. It did require me to think at times! 😉
