Every now and again, I find something I really love. Like REALLY love. I like a lot of things I sew, but some of my sews are my absolute favorites.
This is one of them.
This is the Brittany Skirt by Athina Kakou. I've sewn a few Athina Kakou Patterns. I love Athina's style. She loves sewing and creating beautiful, feminine patterns. I've learned a few techniques from her, and always enjoy her pattern reviews and blog post shares. I love that she sews and shares other patterns too.
I've loved the quality of every Athina Kakou Pattern I've tried. They've all been well drafted, and obviously well thought out. The instructions are illustrated and easy to understand. You'll find notches and markings for helping you line up pattern pieces. Every pattern has gone together easily and smoothly.
This pattern was no exception, and definitely one of my favorite AK makes!
Sewing the Pattern:
This skirt went together very smoothly. I found the instructions easy to follow and understand. And, the skirt was very easy to make. I would say it's a perfect beginner - advanced beginner project. I can remember the first time I sewed an invisible zipper - I had been intimidated by them for some reason... then I discovered that invisible zippers are my favorite kind of zippers to sew, so if you've never done one, don't let that scare you! 😉
Probably from cut to finish, it took me a couple of hours to make. I can't tell you for sure because I have plenty of interruptions, and made it over the course of a couple of days working off and on.
It was definitely simple to make though, and I very much enjoyed the process!
The Pattern:
The pattern is drafted for woven fabrics. You will also need some fusible interfacing (for your waistband) and an 8" invisible zipper. The pattern includes a 5/8" seam allowance.
The skirt has optional large front patch pockets, optional shoulder straps, and as mentioned above, an invisible zipper in the center back.
The skirt is long, designed to hit at mid calf length. There is a lengthen/ shorten line on the pattern so that you can adjust it if you are taller or shorter than the height for which the pattern is drafted.
Fabric Choice:
For this pattern, Athina recommends using a 60" wide woven fabric. I struggle to find many fabrics locally that are 60" wide, so I measured my pieces, and realized that, for my size at least, a narrower fabric would work. I purchased a regular 44" wide fabric from Hobby Lobby. I believe this is a homespun fabric. I love using this for apparel. It's less stiff than quilting fabrics and other cottons, and really easy to find. It doesn't have as much drape as some apparel wovens, but I think it lays really nicely for skirts and dresses. I've frequently sewed this fabric type for my boys and myself.
