My Rosanna Swim Dress

I've been eying this pattern for a while. Like maybe since it released? I've always loved swim dresses. I've had a few through the years, but I've had trouble finding them. So this pattern stood out to me. I love them because I still felt feminine, but covered, especially for the beach, or public pools.

I was excited to try this one out, but I was also a little nervous, because what if I didn't like the fit? I always get a little nervous to possibly waste fabric. But, I guess that's a risk you have to take every now and again. 😉 I made the swim dress. It's not perfect, and I now know of a few minor adjustments I'll make next time, but this one is totally wearable, and I really love it! 


This is my Rosanna Swim Dress!

All About This Pattern:

This pattern can be made as a top, a dress, or a swim dress. If you're making it for swim, there is an optional built in shelf bra, which I used for mine. It includes four cut lengths: the peplum, the swim dress, the short dress, and the long dress. It can be made with a high or a low scoop neck. The back of the dress has a low scoop. There are options for adding a strap in the back, which could provide additional support, or be used to cover up a bra in the back. There are also seams in the front for color blocking.  The neckline and armscyes can be finished using bands or elastic. 



For my Rosanna Swim Dress, I used this really cute melon colored polka dot tricot fabric I bought last year at Amelia Lane Designs.

I wanted to make sure that I had enough length to cover everything. I looked at a bunch of photos of the Rosanna that other people had made in the 5 out of 4 Facebook Group. I decided that the swim dress length was a little shorter than I wanted for a swim dress. I was worried that the short dress length would be too long. So I opted to cut my skirt piece out at 2 inches shorter than the short dress length. I hemmed it 1" and I think it's the perfect swim dress length

I cut bands out, but then ultimately decided to finish the neckline and armscyes with elastic. 

The hself bra is finished with 3/4" elastic at the bottom. I made it a little smaller than my underbust measurement, but after constructing the swimdress, I definitely could have made it a bit shorter for more support. 


I made the shelf bra using two layers. The outside layer of the shelf bra is made using my main swim fabric. The inside layer is made using swim lining. I also sewed in swim cups for support. I was trying to decide whether to use power mesh or not, but I ended up choosing to use the cups and skip the power mesh. I felt like since I was using the good swim for one of the layers, I would be fine without the power mesh. If I sew it again with just swim lining, it's less supportive, and I'd definitely choose to use a layer of powermesh for support.

Changes I Need:

Next time I make this, I think I'll take a slightly bigger seam allowance at the side seams. I'll also shorten the straps a tad - by about a half inch on the front and back to pull it up a tad more for a bit more support. Other than that, I think the fit is good! I am still learning swim and athletic wear, so as I'm more comfortable with different things, I might try different things out to work on getting good support on the shelf bra. 

Overall, I'm happy with the fit of this swimdress! I'll definitely enjoy this all summer!! 

What To Pair With It?

So it's a swim dress, and you can't even see the bottoms, but you still need bottoms, right? I decided to use the 5 out of 4 Ultimate Bikini Bottoms with this dress!

I used the same fabric as for the dress, lined with swim lining. The pattern calls for a waistband, but I decided to cut them at high rise and use elastic rather than the band. They fit comfortably.

I also didn't realize until I was getting ready to make these that this pattern also includes the option of a swim skirt. I didn't need it this time, but I got really excited, because I also like swim skirts for plenty of coverage. I really can't wait to make it again with the skirt option! 

So... I'm VERY excited about my new swimwear for the summer!
