Daniel's Inspiration Hoodie

I saw an ad for a hoodie a little while ago... I kind of liked it for Daniel, so like any normal person would do, I took a screenshot so that I could attempt to recreate it. You know... why buy it for $14 when you can make it for around $10 + 2 hours? 😜

**Disclosure: I have included my affiliate link to the pattern and fabric I used for this post. If you choose to purchase a pattern using my link, I'll receive a small commission from the sale at no additional cost to you!**

So... there we have it! Daniel's color blocked tee! I made this version using the Dill Pickles Tee from Pickle Toes Designs/ Meyraki!

Why An Inspired Sew?

One thing I love about sewing is making things that are different or unique. I love making things that no one else has. But sometimes, it can be a really fun challenge to find something and see if you can recreate it. It's fun to see how close you can get to the original. It's also kind of fun to say, "I could have bought that... but I made it instead." 😉 You won't find many "inspired" sews on my blog, but there are a few, because sometimes they're just fun!

The Pattern I Used:

I used the Dill Pickles Tee by Meyraki Designs/ Pickle Toes Designs (They're rebranding 😉). This is a basic tee with a few options. There is a crew neck and hood option. The hood can be hemmed, banded, or fully lined. There are different sleeve length choices. It can be hemmed or banded. You can sew it in shirt length or tunic length. There is also an optional kangaroo pocket.
he was in a silly mood the day we took pictures!

This pattern is intended to be used for knit fabrics with at least 30% stretch. For bands, you'll want a fabric with a bit more stretch with great recovery.

It is a child's pattern starting in a size 2 and going all the way to a size 22 for youth/ tweens! The size range is amazing! There's a great possibility that you can use this one pattern for all of your kiddos!

Daniel's Hoodie:

I made Daniel's hoodie from cotton lycra fabric. I think I got most (or all?) of these solids from Peek-a-boo Fabric shop. I can't remember where I bought the gray. 😉

I used the shirt length of the pattern and opted to hem it rather than band it, because that was closer to the original that I was copying. I also hemmed the hood rather than lining it because a lined hood on a tee shirt feels kind of heavy to me, and he's unlikely to wear the hood often.

We're (soon 🤞) moving into fall/ cooler weather, so I opted for long sleeves.

The Color Blocking:

The hoodie does not come with color blocking options, but that was a super easy modification. I measured the front of the hoodie from the shoulder to the hem. Then I subtracted 1" for the hem. Then I divided it by 3 to get 3 equal sections.

I cut my front and back hoodie apart and added seam allowance at every cut. I added 1/4 inch seam allowance because I was just serging them together, but you can add whatever you're comfortable with using.

After sewing the sections together, USE YOUR IRON! 😉 Press those seams so everything lays nicely. Optionally, you can topstitch. Topstitiching looks nice, but a pressed seam lays nicely as well!

After your color blocking is done, assemble the tee per the pattern instructions. Be careful at your color blocked sections to line the front and back up as closely as possible!

So there you have it... Daniel's Color Blocked Inspiration Hoodie:

I rarely sew for Daniel without letting him pick everything, because he's picky! This was an exception... I sewed it late after he went to bed with no input from him. I lucked out! He loves it! He didn't want to take it off after photos!

Breaking Ground... FINALLY trying out Itch To Stitch

I've heard nothing but positive reviews on Itch To Stitch Patterns, and I've been meaning to try them out. In fact, I may own one or two, but have never sewed them. When I heard about this "Breaking Ground" Blog Tour, I knew it was the perfect time to try out one of these designers that I've been wanting to try, but apparently haven't had the motivation to sew. I had a scrap of this liverpool left over that I really love, so I had to find the perfect thing to make. I remembered seeing this cute petal pencil skirt on the Itch To Stitch site. It looked easy enough, and would be perfect for my fabric, so I thought, "Why not start with that?" **This post may contain my affiliate links. If you choose to make a purchase from my link, I will receive a small commision of the sale at no additional charge to you.** So here we are... the push I finally needed to spend a few minutes sewing (minutes is right... it's a fast sew). Look at my new skir...

Fun, Fast, and Free - Fresh Looks for Summer!

When I first saw the information about the "Boys in Summer" Blog Tour hosted by Made for Little Gents , I knew I wanted to participate! My boys are the reason I started sewing! I HAD to participate. But, what would I sew? I contemplated what I might make for a couple of weeks, and then it hit me... it would be super fun to highlight a couple of great freebies! EVERYONE loves free stuff. Free patterns are a great way to try a new designer out before making a purchase, they're perfect for adding some variety to your pattern stash without spending money, and they're just super fun... because more patterns = more stuff you get to make. 😁 So the freebies I'm going to talk to you about today are from Peek-a-boo Pattern Shop . I love Peek-a-boo patterns. I've made a few of them for my boys and have tested a few as well. I feel like the instructions are mostly geared towards beginners, so any skill level can be successful with her patterns. I've really en...

January Releases from Amelia Lane Designs

I always get so excited about new fabric releases from Amelia Lane Designs. Frequently, they give me the opportunity to sew something I might not otherwise and try something new. I have learned a lot sewing for them, like how to sew swim and athletic wear. But I've also learned that I actually LIKE wearing fun prints and designs that I haven't always worn.  ** Disclosure: I have included affiliate links to patterns used in this post. If you choose to purchase a pattern using my link, I will receive a small commission of the sale at no additional cost to you.** For this release, I tried something that is really not me - this fun animal print! There have been a few releases recently with fun animal-print fabrics, and I have not sewn any of them, because I thought I wouldn't like wearing them. But after seeing some of the other sewists in the ALD Facebook Group sharing their makes, I knew I HAD to try it! I am really glad I did. This dress makes me so happy! This fabric is a d...
