I made a bathing suit! 👙 An actual bathing suit. I still kind of cannot believe I did it. I also can't believe I made a two piece. I don't think I've actually worn a two piece like this since I was in high school maybe. Will I find the courage to actually wear it to the beach or pool? Still to be decided. 🤣 But I'm super proud of the actual sewing!
I've wanted to do a few projects this year to "push" my skill set and learn new things. One of the things I'd like to tackle is a quilt... the other thing I wanted to try was swim.

I found some courage to try sewing swim a few weeks ago when I made a rashguard and swim skirt. You can read all about it here. But as practical as it is, and as much as I'll wear it, I still had not tried an actual bathing suit - you know, with swim elastic, lining, and bra cups. So... when I saw the tester call for Petite Stitchery, I decided that it's probably the perfect time to try it out. So, without giving it much thought, I went for it, and I'm happy I did!
This is the Solis by Petite Stitchery!
It was surprisingly easy. Like... why haven't I tried this before easy? Also, the thing about sewing a bathing suit is that it takes very little fabric... so if for some reason it had been a failure, I really would not have lost much. That's comforting! I hate when a project doesn't work out according to plan and I've lost a couple of yards of good fabric. But, this project actually did go according to plan. And I'm glad it did, because I went in head first, using my favorite cut of swim fabric! Isn't the fabric pretty?
Let's Talk about the Pattern:
There are a couple of options for sewing this suit. You can make the two piece with the scooped back, like I made. There is a also a different back option that has a cute tie piece. Then, there is the one piece option with a scooped back too. There are two options for the bottoms - modest cut and cheeky cut.
You will need swim fabric with a 4 way stretch, swim elastic, swim lining, and optionally, you'll need swim bra cups if you want the built in shelf-bra. You also can use power mesh for the shelf bra as well. I did not, because I didn't have any when I made mine.
My Suit:
As I mentioned, I made the scoop back 2 piece option. I used the modest cut bottoms. I really like the fit. I will very likely end up wearing something over the bottoms, because I don't like wearing just bikini bottoms out at the beach or pool... It's a bit too much out of my comfort zone.
My Fabric:
I got all of my supplies at Amelia Lane Designs. They're my favorite fabric shop right now! Fast shipping, great customer service, amazing selection, and nice quality!
