Well, I almost always feel like I need more socks. I never feel like I have enough pairs, and half of them always seem to have holes somewhere in them.
So, I was a bit intrigued when I saw the tester call for the SOCK sewing pattern. I had to try it, you know? I've seen other people sewing socks, and have always kind of wanted to try them, but haven't. It seemed like the perfect opportunity
So, meet CKC BOBBY! You may have seen the kids' version in the past, but now you can get the adult version too, and they're all on sale right now!
I've never made the kids' version before, but I can tell you all about the adults' version!
The pattern includes womens' size 5- mens' size 15. There are a few measurements you'll take to get your perfect fit. It is really kind of neat how the pattern is made!
For this pattern, you'll for sure want to pay close attention to the instructions. There are written instructions and a video explaining exactly how to measure and sew the pattern to get your custom fit!
First, you'll need blank paper to trace your foot. There are instructions on measuring the length and width of your foot once it's measured. Then you'll measure your calf and thigh to get your size for crew length, knee length, or thigh high socks. For ankle socks, you'll really only need the length and width of the foot.
There are instructions then for printing the pieces and putting them together to make your custom size sock! You will pick the width based on your foot measurement, then you'll add the length section to get them exactly how long you need them, and then if add on the top part, if you're making crew, knee, or thigh high socks!
They are really easy to sew. The pattern designer liked using her serger, but I found that I prefered to use my sewing machine for certain parts of my socks - like the toe darts and heel darts. It's just personal preference, though, I guess!
The Fabric:
The pattern is designed to be made with knit fabric with good recovery. I made my first pair in DBP, but after sewing them, I decided that I didn't measure my foot accurately because they were too big, so I re-measured and tried again. I did not photograph my first pair.
My second and third pair were both made from cotton lycra.
The solid pair were my crew socks. I think they're my favorite of the two. They're really comfy! My sister asked me if the seams bothered me, and they don't really. I think I've seen some people make socks inside out using a serged rolled hem for the seams on the outside though? So that's just an idea if you find seams bothersome.
My ankle length pair were also made from cotton lycra - this was a custom fabric that I had as a strike a year or so ago. I had this little scrap that I loved so much that I couldn't part with it, but it wasn't really big enough for anything... until I tried socks!
I think that I'll probably mostly use this pattern with cotton lycra in the future. I really like how the cotton lycra versions turned out. I also end up with a lot of cotton lycra small scraps from making little kids' clothes, so I think it'll be a fun way to use up those tiny scraps!
On Sale: The pattern is on sale through the week! It's a really fun pattern, perfect for scrap-busting! It's also a very quick sew!
